Most of the cells of an animal are specialist cells assigned to a specific organ or type of tissue. Adult Stem Cells (ASCs) are different in this respect because when they divide, they produce one adult stem cell which maintains the number of adult stem cells in the living animal and one progenitor cell which can then differentiate into a specialized cell when called for.
